In Finland, “lääkehoito” refers to drug administration, which involves the use of pharmaceuticals to manage or cure medical conditions. The goals of lääkehoito include alleviating symptoms, treating illnesses, preventing disease progression, and improving overall health and well-being. In Finland, taking the lääkehoidon tenti (drug treatment exam) is essential for vocational students working with children and adults. It is a requirement for some vocational programs like Childcare and Education or Assistant Nursing and mandatory for those who work in the healthcare industry. This exam ensures that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to administer medications safely and effectively in workplace settings when needed.
The Test and its Structure
The test has a theory and computation part. They can be taken separately and in different times. The theory exam covers 10 questions of different types selected randomly by test providers and can be taken online. The theory test passing score is at least 80% which means that out of 10 questions, 8 must be correct in order to be considered passed. The test is given for free by schools to own students and private organizations or companies need to pay for the test when required for their employees. If you are private individual who likes to have the qualification, you can also take the test by paying from your own pocket. The theory test is a test of computation. There are only 5 questions where computation is needed and the test taker must get all answers correctly in order to be considered pass.
Test Topics
Lääkehoito or drug treatment test covers topics such as dosage calculations, medication administration methods, and understanding potential side effects. By passing this exam, vocational students demonstrate their competence in handling medication responsibilities, ultimately contributing to the well-being and safety of the children under their care.
Sample Questions on the Test
The following questions and ideas are part of the bank of questions that you would like to consider reading before taking the test. The Helsingin yliopisto, Koulutus- ja kehittämispalvelut HY+ shared some example questions about computation and the basics of drug administration sample questions.
From own experience on the test, the following ideas might help in your study. Please note that these are ideas to ponder upon and can be turned into a question answerable by yes or no. So you have to read about the topic related to the sentences below. I do not remember anymore my answers or the exact sentence. Also note that the test is ONLY CONDUCTED IN FINNISH language.
- In a two types of eyedrops- water based and cream based, which one do you put first?
- Handwashing is always mandatory BEFORE and AFTER the patient contact.
- You are not sure that the injection was contaminated and the color does not change, can you still inject to the patient?
- Is injection under the skin not absorbed into the bloodstream?
- An anaphylactic reaction is not serious if the symptoms disappear without medication. The sentence can also be like – Anaphylaxis, if not treated right away, can be fatal.
- There is no need to check the medicine cupboard when it has been moved or medicines have been changed.
- Out-patients can take home medicine.
- There is no need for the patient to know his or her illness.
Tips on the Exam
For those who are not very familiar with the test and have problem understanding Finnish language, don’t worry, you can still do the exam and pass it in one go like I did. I took the test honestly without preparation because I didn´t know I had an exam wrongly scheduled until the night before the test. My Finnish language is not good enough, I need time to think for every word in their different endings before I can understand the meaning. So the following techniques helped me that time.
- Read the whole sentence first slowly and try to understand the context, not every word. If you understand the whole sentence, then go ahead and answer after you read again and is sure you understand it right.
- If you do not understand the whole sentence and what it means, pick up the words that you know, whether a verb, adjective or noun. Normally these words have different endings and with each different endings you can think about its meaning and you can connect it to the other words in the sentences. The following are example words you can think about.
| alcohol free drug-free medicine -free nameless | alkoholiton huumeeton lääkkeetön nimeton |
in the hospital from the hospital to the hospital | sairaalassa sairaalasta sairaalaan |
| saa voi on mahdollista on mahdotonta | can can it is possible it is impossible |
| potilas potitalle | patient to the patient |
- Use logical thinking. Imagine the situation in real life and draw or make movies in your head based from your own day to day experiences. What would you do in such situation or how did you see others do in a situation given in the sentence?
- Remember markers like ON, EI, EI OLE, VOI, EI VOI, EI SAA, ENNEN, JÄLKEEN, HYVÄ, PAHA, HUONO, ILMAN etc…Sometimes when you misread these words the whole meaning can turn from positive to negative and if the questions are answerable by yes or no, you have to make sure that you understand the question before picking a yes or no answer.
