Planning a trip or move to Finland is exciting, but before packing your bags, one of the most important steps is preparing the correct visa documents. Finland is part of the Schengen Area, which means many travelers may need a visa or residence permit depending on their nationality, purpose of travel, and length of stay. Preparing complete and accurate documents can improve your chances of approval and help avoid delays.
The General Requirements for Visa Application to Finland
Before preparing your documents, you need to know which visa category matches your travel purpose. There are different types of schengen visas and you need to apply for the suitable visa according to your purpose. In general, you need to prepare the following documents in advance for a hassle free application.
- The visa application form completed and signed
- One photograph
- A passport
- Travel insurance
- Supporting documents
- Parental consent is required for minors
- Possible interview
- Bank statements to prove means of financial support while on travel
- Return ticket
Visa Application Form
The first thing you need to prepare is your visa application form after all the documents coming from your sponsor is already prepared. Your sponsor may be your relative or family who is inviting you to come to Finland, an employer, business partner or school where you got a place to study. It is always good to check out the official website of the country where you are visiting to in order to get the latest application form. I am sharing the steps I took to process my visa and that of my friends and families, so it does not guarantee that the process is still the same now, but you can always check out from the official site. You can do the application for yourself or you can pay for someone to process your visa for you through an official visa application center. If you are a Filipino applying a visa from the Philippines, you can apply for your visa at VFS Global in Makati.
Schengen Visa Photograph
The schengen visa to Finland photo was quite different from the normal schengen visa photo. The photographer who took my picture said it is more close up look than the normal schengen visa photo. Given this, I suggest that you use the official visa photograph center to have your photo taken and mention that you will need it for Finland visa application.
Your Passport
Prepare your passport and check that it is not older than 10 years and will be valid for at least 3 months after your travel. Make sure also that your passport is not torned, stamped (except for entries and departures) dirty or used up.
Travel Insurance
.When planning your trip, make sure your travel insurance is active for the whole time you’ll be using your visa and that it works in all Schengen countries, not just Finland. Think of it as your safety backup while traveling. The insurance should cover at least €30,000 and help pay for unexpected situations like suddenly getting sick, having an accident, needing emergency transport back home, or even covering return arrangements in the event of death. It’s one of those important things you hope you’ll never need, but it gives peace of mind during your journey.
You ca buy your insurance from many providers. Check out the list below, compare and choose what suits you best. I have used a few of them for me and my clients.
- SwissCare
- AXA
Parental Consent for Minors
This part is only important not to missed when travelling as a minor. The form is not uniform to all, you can check out your country’s legal office about travelling as a minor. For Filipinos, a DSWD travel clearance can be requested.
Bank Statements
The most important part that you should consider before travelling and to plan ahead of time is the bank statement. Before you apply for a schengen visa, they might ask from you a 3-6 months bank statement with a required amount depending on how long are you staying in Finland or in the schengen area. Keep in mind to have at least 50€ per day as the cost of living. But not only that, you should also be aware that the visa officer might also take a look at your accommodation, which can affect the total amount you need to have in your bank account. So, if you have someone sponsoring some of the expenses, that amount can be lowered. On the other hand, if you do not have any sponsor for anything, then you need to prepare also the cost of your other expenses – accommodation for example, on top of your daily cost. If you have a sponsor, then your sponsor will need to make a letter of sponsorship to prove that he or she is going to shoulder the expenses you might incur.
Return Airfare
Return airfare is one of the requirements so you should also prepare a verifiable air ticket that you can confirm and use once your visa has been approved. There are a couple of options where you can do this online. You can compare and see the prices and choose the one that fits you well. You do not need to buy the return ticket yet, its going to cost you a lot and if your visa is rejected you will lose your money. Ask the travel agency what you need and if they can help you confirm or hold an air ticket for you until your visa process is finished, then you can purchase the same ticket if it fits your visa travel dates. Sometimes you need to change your air ticket to another day thats why it is not the best option to pay for the ticket before visa approval.
Letter of Invitation
If you are visiting someone privately, it is helpful to clearly state whether the person inviting you is your friend, spouse, or relative. However, receiving an invitation does not automatically mean that your visa will be approved. When reviewing your application, immigration officers mainly consider your own financial situation in your home country, not the financial status of your host. An exception may apply in certain business visits where the traveler is not covering the travel costs personally.
Letter of Sponsorship
If your host will pay for your trip, they should provide a sponsorship form together with the required supporting documents instead of only sending an invitation letter. Even in this case, you still need to include details about your own financial circumstances in the application. If your host is not paying for your trip, then a simple free-form invitation letter is usually enough to include with your application.
Be Prepared for an Interview
Interview may be done online or in person. You can expect a call from the Finnish embassy representative if they have something to ask or clarify from you. Be honest of your answers as to what your real intention is. There is nothing to worry about if your travel is genuine and you have sufficient funds and reasons to support it.
Travel Plan or Itinerary
Many Filipinos and international expats feel confused when they see this requirement because they think it must be complicated or that they need to book expensive tickets immediately. The good news is that a travel itinerary is simply a clear plan of your intended trip.
It helps visa officers understand why you are traveling, where you will go, how long you will stay, and whether your plans make sense. A well-prepared itinerary can make your application look organized and genuine. In this guide, I will explain what to write in your travel itinerary, how to structure it, and provide an easy sample you can follow.
First you need to know exactly what are your plans when you arrive. That includes where will you go, how long will you stay there and what you will do exactly. You can create your travel plan daily, weekly or on random dates you choose. Format the plan in a clear and easy to understand to avoid further clarifications.
Get Prepared
While preparing for your visa or after having the visa, you might want to check out other important information about Finland related to education and study, finding jobs, learning Finnish, meeting with locals, participating in local activities, sightseeing and much more that will give you an overview of Finland and what awaits you.
